My character is a soldier and was very attached to his commander, who basically raised him when no one else would take him, whom he considered his father. Him crying because his father died, at his father's funeral does not make him 'emo', so you can shove your edgy jokes and you can stop commenting with said edgy jokes in said funeral log.

Also, when I tell you to stop said edgy jokes and you tell me to fuck off? I get mods involved. Don't cry to me because you got a warning.

Amelia [Nov. 15th, 2009|08:23 pm]

[mood | cheerful]
[music |The Beach Boys - Crocodile Rock]

For hours ago I returned home after a most restful weekend spent in the company of [info]huskyteer and, to a lesser but no-less enjoyable, [info]calgor.

Driving down Friday evening was hairy. It took me 2 hours to get to Leicester, usually this leg is done in around forty minutes. Closure of the M6 was the culprit.

Wind and rain also featured heavily but by the time I reached Kent, things were much calmer.

I arrived at the flat before [info]huskyteer returned from a gig but was made welcome by her flatmate [info]calgor who entertained me with tea, toast and dork-talk (no slight intended, I was just as dorky!).

Not long after Huskyteer arrived home, bed called as we were both tired. Hail and thunderstorms contrived to keep me awake most of the night so a lot of coffee was the order of the day come morning!

A good few hours were spent mooching around The Bluewater shopping centre. The first port of call was Starbucks where myself and Huskyteer indulged our shared love of Gingerbread Latte.

In HMV I purchased a new copy of The Wall on CD as my old copy is a) scratched and b) nowhere to be found - both rather detrimental to my enjoyment of the album when not sat at my PC!

I was in danger of spending more than I intended to as the lure of the Lego shop and TWO "Blokes stuff, office toys and pointless-but-amusing gadget shops" next to each other. I nearly wound up with a V8 pencil sharpener, a Guinness tankard and a tabletop air-hockey set. Nearly.

After dinner at Yo! Sushi (because it's an novel concept and it's one more box ticked) we headed back to the flat for coffee, dinner and Bolt! before it was time to venture out once more.

This time we headed into Greenwich for a showing of Amelia - a film about the legendary female aviator, Amelia Earhart. Definately a film for the enthusiast but it was fun all the same. I knew the story but was still somewhat deflated at the end and I do hope my resulting silence was not mistaken as grumpiness!

Two shots of Schnaaps (from hand-thrown clay shot-cups I hasten to add!) was enough to induce sleep...mind you the fact I had little sleep the night before didn't do me any favours either.

A better night's sleep was had last night and, after coffee and breakfast, I reluctantly headed home. Aside from a bit of thick traffic at the approach to the Blackwall Tunnel, things were much calmer than the outbound journey. Good weather and no need to rush made for a leisurely drive.

I stopped at my usual stopping point, Toddington services for refreshments. Whilst there I had a go at a "Shoot Targets and win prizes" game. I won a little Husky plush on a keychain - result!

Home now. Bathed, shaved and already have the (guitar) intro and verses down for a great song I discovered over the weekend - Stray Cat Strut - By The Stray Cats, funnily enough!

The new meaning of "BRB" [Nov. 15th, 2009|06:08 pm]

While we technically weren't rp-ing while you did this, we still are RP buddies, so it probably counts.

According to you "BRB" does not mean "Be right back". It means "Hey, I'ma stop responding for a while, but feel free to pester and bug me until I do."

RRRRRRRR.

Staying Flu-free at this year's MFF? Here's how! [Nov. 15th, 2009|07:56 am]

midwest_furfest

[sassy_fae]
Only five days left til MFF!

While studying this year's programming, I saw "Con Health 101" listed, talking about ways to stay healthy during (and after!) this year's con. That's an awesome idea for a panel! I remember coming down with some sort of bug from last year's con, and it almost seems inevitable, doesn't it?

My community's been hard hit by the H1N1 virus since fall started. I spent several days in bed with the worst flu I've had in years, and I'm eager to ensure no one has to endure this bug (or any of the others) as a result of being in close quarters with a big chunk of furry fandom for three or four days!

What precautions are you going to take to keep yourself healthy? Here's a few of mine:

-Avoid touching your face. Seriously. Eyes, nose, mouth, all will happily take in any germs on your hands that you've picked up from touching the same cool stuff everyone else has been touching

-Don't snack from a communal snack bowl. If you reach in for a handful of snacky goodness, you're touching a bunch of food that's not going to your mouth, and you're eating a bunch of food touched by someone else. Who's probably been licking their fingers. Mmmm.

-Wash your hands like you're five and your Mom is standing over you watching.
Warm water, soap, and lather/rinse for 20 seconds. That's how long it takes for the soap to be effective at killing the germs and/or dissolving the oils that the germs are clinging to. If you're finished washing your hands before you would finish the ABC song (at the regular speed you'd sing it with kids), you've not done it long enough. Get your cuticles and fingernails too: you've got lots of time. If you think you're too busy to wash for that long, try and decide if you have time to be in bed for three days, wondering why the painkillers and cough syrup don't seem to do anything. I'm not exaggerating.

-Dry your hands with paper towelling. Studies have shown that not only does bacteria growth on your fingers and palms increase after using an air dryer, but the air dryer itself can blow germs onto people nearby! Paper towelling also helps finish the job of removing germs from the skin, removing 77% of the bacteria left on the hands (air dryers can increase the bacteria left on your hands after washing by 254%) You know those new model jet dryers, with the high speed air and quick dry time? Those only increase bacteria by 40%. However, where the old dryer only blow bacteria a little ways from the user, the new machines can blast them up to 2 meters away (that's 6 feet for you non-Canadians :)

-Carry hand lotion to compensate for the extra hand washing you'll be doing. If your hands get dry and cracked, the germs can just get into your body directly, none of this waiting til they're near your face.

-Carry hand sanitizer for the times you can't wash your hands. The stuff is no substitute for soap and water, and won't make hands less dirty (only less germy) but it's a whole lot better than nothing at all. The stuff can be drying to the skin, so see above, re: hand lotion. You can get both in wee little travel bottles, convenient for pockets.

Tell me some of the things you'll be doing this year! Anything from coughing into your sleeve to not licking your roomies. You know, unless that's something you're all into. Consenting adults and all that. ;)

Lovely UKLJers. I'm in need of your help once again.

Do you remember the high winds at the beginning of October? We do. They caused half a tree to flatten our car.

Well, now after you've all stopped laughing I have a question. The trees opposite our house are very overgrown and it is the Council's responsibiliy to maintain the pruning of such trees. A few of the residents had already complained to the council about how dangerous these trees look when the wind is in full force. Our insurance is being sorted out but do you think I can make a claim to the Council as well? Does anyone have any advice/experience of a similar thing happening to them? The only thing I've ever claimed for is a video in 1988 when I was burgled so have limited experience myself.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Gratefully yours

Chris

I missed this the music video the first time round - El Caco and "Substitute".
It neatly highlights what many "right thinking" people have for a while, that Rock n' Roll can have a corrupting influence on our cartoon cats.

It's a very neat art style - though still trying to decide whether it's only vaguely safe for work or not.

So, as those of you on my flist know, I'm in the process of working to get my UK driver's license on a standard transmission after many years of driving automatic. I already know UK and US attitudes towards manual v. automatics are very different, but further to some cultural confusion on my LJ, I have to ask the great transatlantic collective this exceedingly important and burning question about hill starts:

Poll #1485714
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 111

Burning question!

View Answers

I start on a hill using the handbrake/emergency brake and I learned to drive in the US
12 (10.8%)

I start on a hill using the handbrake/emergency brake and I learned to drive in the UK
42 (37.8%)

I start on a hill using only the pedals and I learned to drive in the US
50 (45.0%)

I start on a hill using only the pedals and I learned to drive in the UK
7 (6.3%)

I don't think there's necessarily a right or wrong way--it's just that the familiarity with each method seems to fall pretty strictly across cultural divides on my flist. However, my instructor's teaching me to do it without--which shoots a hole in my theory, though he's taught a lot of American expats. So I'm looking for a larger pool of anecdotal evidence. ;)

eta: I just thought--it'll be interesting to see how many Americans participate in this poll vs. Brits.

Dear College Students Who Can't Behave,

This is a game meant for KIDS! Children! Little people!
We have rules based around this, such as no cussing in OOC posts, and only one cuss can be uncensored in an IC post.
So why the hell do you feel the need to ask in the help area if you can light up a blunt on this game?
Why would you ask someone on this game if they like rectal intercourse!?
WHY THE HELL would you rp fingerbanging your girlfriend!?

Dear ex-of-my-best-friend,

Pixels DO NOT equal people! You've got some nerve having a problem with me RPing with someone I've known for SEVEN YEARS, on characters that were established as a couple before you ever came along. This does not in ANY way indicate that she's cheating on you, with another straight girl, no less!

Never liked you much to begin with,
Me

Dear people on Furcadia that have become too numerous to count,

Unless your shirt is lost at sea, you should not be mentioning it and the word 'mid-drift' in the same sentence. And stalkings? I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be wearing the act of creepily following someone, plural, as footwear. (I know this sentence is awkwardly worded, it makes sense in my head.)

Dear other people on Furc that think they're being cute,

HOW does a female character with nowhere near the same hair and eye color, wardrobe, weapon, or anything really, look -anything- like a female version of Link? Yes, she's Hylian. That is where the similarities end.
